CALIBRATIONS

Per the FDOT any lab that performs calibrations for the Speedy, Scales, Concrete Air Meter, Roll-a-Meter, Slump Cone and Thermometers do not require the ISO 17025 Accreditation. The only requirement is that OTS Calibrations equipment that is used must be calibrated, if required (See certifications at the bottom of this page). The Speedy, weights and thermometers, require calibrated equipment, the Concrete testing equipment does not. My thermometer's are purchased pre-calibrated, until such time I can acquire the calibration equipment. Also note, we are in the process of obtaining the ISO Certification, so that we may calibrate the equipment for the testing labs, sometime in 2023.

See the following from the FDOT State Materials Office (Official email from FDOT is available upon request):

There are no specific requirements for performing calibration/ verification of concrete equipment. As the user of the equipment, you can perform the calibration/ verification or hire a subcontractor like OTS Calibrations. The calibration would just need to meet requirements of the particular standard its used for. You just need to be reasonably sure the calibration/ verification is performed properly and documented, using nationally traceable standards when required. The calibration certificate should include the information for the piece of equipment itself,  as well as the calibration equipment used.

For example, in calibrating a concrete thermometer, the record should identify the equipment (id or serial number), the readings for of the thermometer against the reference standard, and if its within tolerances. The reference standard used should also be identified (for example we have a NIST traceable calibration block for thermometers).

I can’t speak for concrete equipment but as far as speedy, the Department doesn’t have any specific certification for calibrating speedy similar to the nuclear gauge. As long as OTS’s calibrator is calibrated then OTS calibrator can calibrate industry speedy’s. I have copied in Jose Armenteros from the Structures office in relation to the concrete equipment. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
